Topic: Prophecy

Dear Church Leader:

Foretelling the future truly is the most amazing of phenomena. Just think if it could be done on demand—how it would impact dealings with the stock market and anticipating the outcome of sports events, not to mention avoiding wars and other catastrophes like plane crashes, shuttle explosions, and other unwanted surprises.

Foretelling the future ranks right up with time travel itself. John’s Revelation is basically that: an incursion into the future and a return to the present with a detailed report of things to come. Handled properly, the teaching and preaching of prophecy can be some of the most powerful, compelling content in the whole of Scripture.

Hal Seed used to avoid prophecy in his preaching. But when he finally waded into it, he was surprised at the impact it had on his church. To learn more, you can read his article, “Preaching the Tough Stuff of Prophecy.” Hal is a seasoned pastor and preacher of New Song Church in Oceanside, California. He also runs a ministry called PastorMentor.com, designed to mentor other pastors as they help their churches grow to an attendance of 1,000 and beyond.

I hope your Labor Day has a marked decrease in labor. God bless you for all the sacrifices you make as a servant of God.

In Christ,

Preaching the Tough Stuff of Prophecy

Full Article

As a preacher I’m called to proclaim the whole counsel of God, yet for years I shied away from the prophetic books. After all, most of them are confrontational, controversial and confusing. Then, one Labor Day weekend, I invited one of my Board members (not even a staff member, mind you) to do a message on the end times. Our attendance usually flags a bit on holiday weekends, but that weekend it surged. I decided it was time to face my fears and tackle the perils of prophecy head-on.

Okay, maybe not exactly head-on. I decided to start by preaching the book of Daniel. Ask any small group what they’d like to study next, and a substantial number of them will say, (Either Revelation or Daniel.) Daniel is the shorter of the two, and besides, one-half of it is history, not prophecy. I titled the series Future History and scheduled it to begin December 1. It allowed me to use Christmas Eve to talk about Daniel’s influence on the Wise Men.

To my surprise, the church filled up during that series! We grew by 17% over the next ten weeks. People were so hungry for more, I ended up writing a book on Daniel. Was that series a fluke, or had I tapped into something?

Bible Prophecy for Dummies
by David Dykes
Luke 17:20-37

Luke 17 is one of the many prophetic passages in the Bible. Jesus spoke about His future return to earth. I decided we need a book called Bible Prophecy for Dummies. So, I’m going to try to take the confusing topic of Bible Prophecy and make it so easy to understand so even those of us who are dummies can comprehend it. In all the Dummies books, the terms associated with the topic are clearly defined. So, before we get into the scripture, let’s start by defining some basic terms in Bible Prophecy.

Why Study Prophecy
by Chanon Mullins
Matthew 24:1-3

Words like the “Rapture,” the “Tribulation,” and “Judgment” are used daily in our Christian conversation, church meetings and in the media without consequence or understanding. What do these words mean? How do we understand their purpose? And how does it affect me? In a day in which Israel is threatened with the possibility of Nuclear attacks, the US seems to be more divided on faith than ever and Christians everywhere are asking why; we will look to God’s Word for the answer to these questions and seek to gain understanding as we look to the coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

1,335 Days and 2,300 Days
by Amy Bickel
Daniel 12:11-12

These two lengths of time are found nowhere else in Scripture. This fact makes them very difficult to understand, because while this passage tells us when to begin counting this length of time and how long they will last, it doesn’t tell us what happens at the end of these lengths of time. Why give us such specific dates? What is the importance of them? What is God trying to tell us?

They've All Been Wrong
Contributor: Timothy Peck

Looking back at how Christians have viewed Christ’s second coming in the past, we find many people obsessed with figuring out all the details and making predictions. Here is a quote: “The last days are upon us. Weigh carefully the times. Look for him who is above all time, eternal and invisible” …

The Odds of Jesus
Contributor: Timothy Smith

Dr. Peter Stoner, Professor Emeritus of Science at Westmont College, wrote a book entitled Science Speaks (Moody Press, 1969, P.109) in which he wrote about the law of “compound probability” in reference to just 8 of these prophecies about Jesus coming true. He said that the odds of one man accidently fulfilling 8 of these detailed prophecies is 1 in 10 to the 17th power. …

The Prophecy of Daniel Ortega
Source: Greg Dabel in Managua, World, October 27, 1996, Vol. 11, No. 23, pp. 20-21

Across Nicaragua, graffiti plastered houses, walls, and public buildings. The most prevalent campaign slogan everywhere was: “Daniel 5:25.” Intended to be a simple instruction on how to vote, it literally meant, “Vote for Daniel Ortega, the 5th position on the ballot, on the 25th day of September.” But Christians in Nicaragua saw a hidden meaning that only God, the author of humor, could orchestrate. …

Cicadas and the End Times
Contributor: Richard Tow

When I was growing up in West Texas cicada (pronounced si-ka'-da) “locusts” like the one pictured on the screen filled the giant elm trees at times. During the heat of the summer the shrill buzzing sound of their mating call filled the air. To this day anytime I get in dry, hot weather I remember that buzzing sound. On the tree trunks we would find the empty shell of the living organism—a dead, dried out, fragile exoskeleton that retained the form of the locust. Life was gone. The locust itself was no longer in the exoskeleton. But there its lifeless claws held to the trunk of the tree. …

Prophecy in the Bible
Source: Today in the Word, MBI, December, 1989, p. 40. Submitted by Guy Caley

Dr. George Sweeting once estimated that “more than a fourth of the Bible is predictive prophecy...Both the Old and New Testaments are full of promises about the return of Jesus Christ. Over 1800 references appear in the O.T., and seventeen O.T. books give prominence to this theme. Of the 260 chapters in the N.T., there are more than 300 references to the Lord’s return—one out of every 30 verses.” …
