Dear Church Leader:

I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and all those in your churches a very Merry Christmas.  We are celebrating the most mind-blowing of truths:  God himself, the Creator, took on the form of his creatures—as a man.  Wow!  A king in crib.  God in a stable.  What a humble God.  What a compassionate God.  For you.  For me.  For people everywhere.  That birth was the pivotal point of all history.  That birth made the difference for each one of us.  Sure, there are presents flying everywhere.  Sure, we can get distracted by eggnog and cookies.  But in the midst of all the wonderful excitement, I know he is there, he is near, he is eager to be recognized among us-and within us.  May Emmanuel touch you deeply this Christmas season.

This week’s article by James Davis is a collection of sound bites with one of the most highly trained preachers anywhere.  His 32 insights are a Christmas gift for the preachers of SermonCentral.  You can also read the more extensive (scholarly) article here.  James is a great leader.  His earnest vision to reach a billion souls for Christ can be seen at the “Second Billion” website. You may even want to attend the Synergize Conference in Florida later in January.

I’m sure that by now you’ve prepared almost everything for your Christmas services.  If you haven’t quite sewn up the last loose ends, you might take a peek at our Christmas page.  Or if you’re getting ready for New Year’s, we’ve got a page for that, too.

Wonder what the vacation practices of your colleagues are?  See and share through our Pastor’s Vacation Survey this week.

In light of New Year’s, we won’t be sending out a newsletter on December 31, so we’ll reconnect in 2008!

Enjoy the season.  Enjoy the baby.  Enjoy God who is with us.

32 Quotes on Effective Preaching

by James O. Davis
Billion.tv

  1. Personal power and charisma are not mysterious.  Some believe that one cannot earn it or learn it.  This is not true.  The effectiveness of your communications determines the effectiveness of your life.
  2. Leaders whom people respect and follow are those who are able to communicate effectively.  They have a dynamic presence.
  3. If you desire to make a difference, you will have to learn to communicate with a powerful presence.  You must be able to communicate what you want to get done in the church, in the ministry, and in life.
  4. The pulpit is no greater than the evangelist or pastor who fills it on a weekly basis.
  5. If the preacher is boring to the congregation, the people will think God is boring.
  6. Some ministers have style without substance while others have substance without style.
  7. Many souls are not saved because the sermon was never delivered to the lost.
  8. It is possible for the preacher to speak the message, use up a portion of time, give an altar call, and still not accomplish the intended purpose of the sermon.
  9. Many ministers of the Gospel spend most of their time thinking about what they are going to say to the audience, yet the average person is persuaded more by feelings than by facts. Mannerisms, gestures, head movements, facial expressions, platform movement, eye contact and clothing project the overall presence of the presenter.

1
New Year’s
by Clyde White
Luke 10:41-42
Yes, I’d say that we Christians need to make some real changes in order to make our "walk" equal our "talk". Just a few hours ago, many believers made a determination or "resolution" to do better. However, most who make such determinations have no real idea what is involved in bringing such resolutions to reality, OR the consequences of not keeping such a commitment to God.

New Year Priorities
by
Steve Shepherd
Matthew 6:33
What are your priorities in life? And what are your priorities for any given day? What’s your first order of business besides getting out of bed and cleaning up your body? Coffee? Breakfast? Read the paper? TV news? Or pray and read Scripture or a devotional book?

New Year’s Commitment
by Jerry Falwell
Nehemiah 2:18
New things give us an opportunity to start over. A new job means you have a challenge to do better than the last job. In a new job they don’t know your weaknesses, failures and problems. A new job is a second chance. We need to make a new commitment for the New Year. The world makes New Year’s resolutions; I want us to make a NEW YEAR COMMITMENT.

New Year’s Resolutions Require More Than Duct Tape
by Chris Mason
Mark 10:17-22
The first week in January has to be the most depressing week of the year! The holidays are over, all the family and friends are gone, the presents have all been opened, the Christmas candy has dwindled, and now it’s time to go back to work and school! What a drag! While I think that all of those things are very depressing, they are not the most depressing aspect of the first week in January.

How To Meet The New Year
by Darrell Garrett
Philippians 3:13-14
Why has mankind found it necessary to celebrate the beginning of a New Year? The answer to that lies somewhere in the spiritual instincts of man. From ancient times he has known that progression is built into the foundations of the universe. The Hebrew people were keenly aware that the God of creation gave new days and new years with new opportunities and new responsibilities. Time is life.

Dad’s  Resolution

Last year when I called my parents to wish them a happy New Year, my dad answered the phone. "Well, Dad, what’s your New Year’s resolution?" I asked him. "To make your mother as happy as I can all year," he answered proudly. Then mom got on, and I said, "What’s your resolution, Mom?" "To see that your dad keeps his New Year’s resolution."

Resolution

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.

3
Resolution Phases

A young man was at a New Year’s party. He asks his friend for a cigarette. The friend replied, “I thought you made a New Year’s resolution to quit smoking.” The young man answered, “I’m in the process of quitting; right now, I am in the middle of phase one.” “What’s phase one?” his friend asked. The young man replied, “I’ve quit buying."

4
Deciding to Jump

A boy told his father, "Dad, if three frogs were sitting on a limb that hung over a pool, and one frog decided to jump off into the pool, how many frogs would be left on the limb?" The dad replied, "Two." "No," the son replied.  "There are three frogs and one decides to jump, how many are left?" The dad said, "Oh, I get it, if one decides to jump, the others would too. So there are none left. "The boy said, "No dad, the answer is three. The frog only DECIDED to jump." Does that sound like last year’s resolution? Great inspiration and great resolutions, but often times we only decide, and months later we are still on the same limb of do-nothing.

Resolutions of 2007

Here are the percentages of resolutions that people have promised to make for 2007. Now, if you are into making goals and wanting to set them there is a website just for you. It’s called mygoals.com and it helps you stay on track, but it also has trends for what people are going to make as goals for 2007. Here is the breakdown: 27% of resolutions involve health and fitness, which is down from last year. 15% involve personal growth and interests, 15% personal finance, 9% education and training, 6% time management and organization, 5% recreation and leisure, 5% family and relationships. So let’s go back to priorities for a second. We said, well, surely the answer should be God is #1, but notice that list again. Did you hear me mention any resolution concerning God? It’s not there. To find anything about spirituality you have to look in the personal growth section, and there you will see that in the personal growth and interests - the second most popular resolution - only 2% are interested in becoming more spiritual. By the way, improving one’s mind and attitude is at 27% and improving one’s appearance is at 22%, yet changing their spiritual makeup is only a dismal 2%. Need further proof? The Barna Group which specializes in research about Christianity reported that only 1 out of 7 adults (15%) place their faith in God at the top of the priority list. You say, well, that’s not fair because some of those are non-Christians. Okay, the survey goes on and says that out of Christians, not quite 1 out of 4 (23%) place their faith in God at the top of the priority list. The majority of people are focused on the here and now and not on their relationship with God.
