Dear Church Leader:

Many have called HB London the “Pastor of America’s Pastors.”  As Vice President of Pastoral Ministries for Focus on the Family, Dr. London oversees the website Parsonage.org.  He also distributes his Pastor’s Weekly Briefing, a free publication of Focus on the Family.  Dr. London will be a plenary speaker at the Rethink Conference this January 17-19 (along with more than 30 other nationally known speakers including former President George H.W. Bush, Lee Strobel, John Ortberg, John Townsend, and Kay Warren).

In this week’s featured article, “Resisting Unhealthy Adoration from Those We Lead,” HB offers frank warnings and exhibits a model attitude for pastors to emulate as they lead the people of God.

Next week we’ll hear from leading Christian psychologist Dr. John Townsend.  Be sure to watch for his article tailored to the needs of pastors.  In anticipation of next week, please share your thoughts in our survey on Pastors and Friendship.

Pursuing humility with you,

Resisting Unhealthy Adoration from Those We Lead

by HB London
Focus on the Family/Parsonage.org

Do you remember the Rajneesh cult that came from India to the United States?  I saw communities of this cult for the first time when I visited India in the early 80s. I could hardly stand  the sight of their orgies, filled as they were with an incredible display of opulence and unbridled sexual activity. Followers dressed in various shades of red treated their leader like a god. I wondered what kind of twisted thinking allowed a man to receive such worship, such accolades. One day the newspapers announced that the Rajneesh cult was setting up shop in eastern Oregon. The cult members had chosen this site as their base of operations for impacting North America. Because of my experience in India, I felt apprehensive about the results of their presence in our state. I asked a lawyer friend to drive with me to the community where they were setting up shop, so we could see for ourselves.

As we drove down the gravel road toward the commune, posted guards made sure we knew that we were being watched. The enormous number of persons dressed in red clothing made the scene surreal. As we drove through the area, the cult members went about business as though we did not exist. No one spoke. No one asked our names. No one inquired about what brought us to the community. We did not exist as far as they were concerned.

Soon the whole scene changed. As if responding to some secret signal, everyone moved to the roadside. As the Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh passed by, his devotees worshiped him, as they did every afternoon when he was driven down this road in one of his hundred-plus Rolls Royces. I watched the crowds as they shouted, waved and bowed in his honor; and I thought about Jesus arriving in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.

The cult followers showered their leader with flowers. They cheered as if they were in the presence of royalty. The Bhagwan had such a regal self-image that he didn't even get out of the car. From his backseat, he simply waved to his subjects. Then the parade ended; the Rolls picked up speed and drove away. Worshipers were left to rejoice over their short glimpse of their glorious leader. Under God's intervention, the civil authorities in Oregon concluded that the Bhagwan was unethical and that his past was tainted.

The Anointing-Empowerment for Service
by John Smithson
Exodus 30:22-33
We talk about the anointing all the time. We go away from church and we say things like, “the preacher was anointed today or the song leader was really under the anointing.” I used to think that the anointing came upon you when you stood up to preach or sing, and then when you were done it would go away. I used to hope and pray that I would be anointed when I stood behind the pulpit.

The Anointing
by
Danny Thomas
1 Samuel 16:10-13
Noah was troubled by an ungodly world. But one day he was anointed to build. Jacob struggled for years with who he was compared to who he wanted to be. But one day he was anointed to walk. Moses struggled to find his place in the purpose and will of God. One day he was anointed to lead.

The Anointed of God Can…
by Rick Adams
1 Samuel 16:1-18:20
As First we must understand that there is a difference between the Holy Spirit and the anointing of God. Jesus said, “The Spirit is upon Me because I am anointed.” To be anointed simply means consecrated, or set a part, for service. The Holy Spirit then gives the anointed the empowerment to operate in the anointing. Usually this anointing was to appoint kings and priests. Spiritual anointing with the Holy Ghost is conferred upon Christians by God.

Anointed to Stand
by Joshua Morgan
1 Samuel 16:13
An elderly woman walked into the local country church. The friendly usher greeted her at the door and helped her up the flight of steps. "Where would you like to sit?" he asked politely. "The front row please." she answered. "You really don’t want to do that", the usher said. "The pastor is really boring." "Do you happen to know who I am?" the woman inquired. "No." he said. "I’m the pastor’s mother," she replied indignantly.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Preaching
by Paul Fritz
John 16:13-16
The Spirit of God can correct us when we go astray from the Scripture’s teaching, provided that we are open for instruction. Isaiah 30:21 says, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, “This is the way, walk in it.’’ Jesus assured us in Acts 1:8 that the Spirit would come upon us and empower us to be His witnesses in our Jerusalems, Judeas, Samarias, and to the uttermost parts of the earth!

1
Anointing in Prayer

"What the Church needs today is not more machinery or better, new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use -- men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not flow through methods, but through men. He does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men, men of prayer."

Not-So-Anointed Preaching!

There once was a farmer who felt that God was calling him to change his vocation. Sitting under a tree one day, he witnessed what he believed to be a miracle: the clouds seemed to form the letters P and C. Deciding that this was God’s way of telling him to “Preach Christ,” he sold his farm and his tractor, and began to preach. And he was absolutely horrible! After the sermon was over, the “preacher” farmer was confronted by a neighbor. His neighbor spoke to him as gently as possible: “Are you sure God wasn’t just trying to tell you to Plant Corn?”

Preaching for Prayer

"Shall I give you yet another reason why you should pray? I have preached my very heart out. I could not say any more than I have said. Will not your prayers accomplish that which my preaching fails to do? Is it not likely that the Church has been putting forth its preaching hand but not its praying hand? Oh dear friends! Let us agonize in prayer."

A Gift for Preaching

In Streams of Living Water, Richard Foster told of Billy Graham preaching at Cambridge in 1955. For three nights he tried to make his preaching academic and enlightened, but with no effect. Graham finally realized that presenting the intellectual side of faith was not his gift and began preaching the simple message of Jesus rescuing us from our problem with sin. Foster wrote, "The results were astonishing: hundreds of sophisticated students responded to this clear presentation of the Gospel. It was a lesson in clarity and simplicity that he never forgot."

Preaching the God-Given Message

In the sixteenth century there was a protestant reformer in England by the name of Hugh Latimer. He was known as a great preacher of his day, and he had many opportunities to preach. One of his opportunities was to preach before the King Henry VIII of England. He thought about his great responsibility to bring a message before the king. He also thought that the message that God laid on his heart was not the message that the king was going to want to hear.

As he contemplated this, he said that he heard a voice: “Latimer, remember you are preaching before King Henry VIII who, if he wills, can take away your life.” Then as he began to contemplate this, he heard another voice: “Latimer, remember you are preaching before the King of Kings, do not displease him.”

Latimer had a struggle with motives. Would he preach what man wanted to hear or would he preach what Christ would have him preach. Latimer chose to preach what Christ would have him to preach? Ultimately it cost Latimer his life.
