Dear Church Leader:

Who has lived Jesus in front of you so that his image has been seared into your soul for a lifetime?  That person has mentored you.  It’s the “caught-taught” thing.  When someone lives life before us—we catch things that can’t be taught in a hundred years.

Jesus was a mentor, a master mentor.  And he continues to mentor by indwelling and shining through his children.  That makes us mentors.  Gary Smalley paints an excellent picture of the value of being mentored—and being a mentor.  Life-on-life contact is a mysterious, powerful, and wonderful thing.  Read his article here.

Speaking of mentors, Dr. Smalley will be one of the featured speakers at the incredible Rethink Conference.  He’ll be there, as will George H.W. Bush, George Barna, George Foreman, and some other top-flight people who aren’t named George.  Like Chuck Colson, HB London, Larry King, Rupert Murdoch, and John Ortberg.  (I plan to be there myself, but I won’t be on the platform with the rest of these speakers!)  Think about attending yourself.  It promises to be an amazing event.

We’re interested in your thoughts through our survey about mentoring.  Share them here.

Have a mentor.  Be a mentor.  And have a great week!

Why Leaders Need Godly Leaders

by Dr. Gary Smalley
Rethink Conference

“'Time for breakfast!' I would hear my mother say, 'Your father’s getting ready to go!'”

My good friend John is 70 years old, but his memories of his father are still in the back of his mind.

“There were lots of days when I would wake up early and get dressed as fast as I could,” he told us. “I’d be hunting for my long johns, smelling the bacon and eggs cooking downstairs, and listening for my father’s voice.

“Before he took me out with him to the farm to work, he’d always tell me the plans for the day.  I can still remember the sounds of starting up the tractor and making sure we had our coffee thermos and snacks in the large weathered brown paper bag.

“I couldn’t wait to sit beside him at the breakfast table and then climb up beside him on the tractor.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was getting daily lessons in what it meant to be a real man and just as important, a leader!”

In John’s years on the farm, he got everyday lessons in how to make man-sized decisions.  Like the time their harvesting combine broke down and they had to work all night to fix it.  Or the time their bull got out and trampled a neighbor’s dog.  Their neighbors were furious, and he got to see his father resolve the problem.

By watching his dad work, love and care about the needs of others, John was able to see what leadership looks like.  How to react.  What to stand for.  What to fight against. When to be compassionate.

Unfortunately, this kind of mentoring rarely happens today, whether talking about dads or especially in regards to developing leaders.  Our super technology and fast-paced lifestyles don’t cater to training by example.  An average leader working 60-plus hours a week will usually barely have time to keep up with his or her own family much less the opportunity to mentor someone else.

What is Mentoring?
by Herman Abrahams
2 peter 3:8
What is mentoring? Mentoring is a process involving people. Sometimes it’s a whole series of individuals that God brings into your life at various stages and for various purposes. In every case, these people are sent by God to help you grow and perpetuate the learning processr.

Mentoring Mentors
by
Jake Kircher
Philippians 2:1-14
Four years ago when the New England Patriots began the 2002 season, they were a group of mostly average players that no one really expected much from. Four games into the season, their all-pro quarterback Drew Bledsoe was injured and unable to play for the majority of the season and their win-lose record stood at 1-3. 23-year-old rookie Tom Brady was the replacement for Bledsoe, who at the time didn’t look too promising for the Patriots’ 2002 season. At that point, Vegas set the odds for the Patriots to win the Super Bowl as 10,000 to 1.

Mentoring Men
by Brian Bill
Titus 2:1-8
As we turn today to Titus 2, the focus, as John MacArthur states, “changes from the pastors to the people, from the elders to everybody, and from the leadership to the laity.” Specifically, Paul’s passion is for people to live out the transforming power of the Gospel and not to look like the “same old bunch of believers.” In this chapter, Paul addresses five different groups:

Six Marks of a Spiritual Mentor
by Jim Butcherl
1 Corinthians 4:14-21
There are two ways to become a spiritual father. One is to be part of birthing someone to new life. The second is to raise a spiritual child into a spiritual adult (an adoption type of situation). In both cases, we’re talking, as it refers to earlier in v. 15, about a special relationship, which is not something that’s true of every teacher that we sit under. We need to ask ourselves whether we have “birthed” anyone and been a spiritual father or mother to them.

Why Jesus Encouraged People to Seek the Mentorship of Godly People
by Paul Fritz
Luke 6:40
We all tend to acquire the best and worst traits of our most influential teachers. Jesus urges us to adopt mentors that are Christ-like in their thinking, attitudes, and behavior. “It is better to train ten people than to do the work of ten people. But it is harder.” – D.L. Moody. William A. Ward has said, "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

The Value of a Mentor

Respondents [to a survey], who had experienced a mentoring relationship at some point in their careers, whether formal or informal, were asked to name the single greatest benefit of the relationship. In response, 37 percent said that a mentor provides insight into a particular field or industry. Thirty-two percent said that the mentor serves as a confidant or advisor, and 16 percent said the mentor provides encouragement and boosts morale. That boost in morale can go a long way toward creating a more productive, loyal workforce.

What Every Disciple Needs

"Every disciple needs three types of relationships in his life. He needs a ‘Paul’ who can mentor him and challenge him. He needs a ‘Barnabas’ who can come along side and encourage him. And he needs a ‘Timothy,’ someone that he can pour his life into.".

Chuck Swindoll’s Mentor

One of the greatest spokesmen for the cause of Christ today is Chuck Swindoll, host of the national radio broadcast "Insight for Living," for many years a pastor and president of Dallas Theological Seminary. Howard Hendricks, who was one of Chuck’s teachers while he was in seminary, remembers him as a real go-getter in school. Howard said, "I felt this guy was a winner from the moment I met him. He always sat in the front row. His questions were extraordinarily perceptive, and even after class the questions did not stop. It was abundantly clear that this man had a bright future ahead of him" However, Chuck says that he struggled with self-doubt for years and at times even thought of quitting the ministry. One factor that helped him to hang in there was his relationship with his mentor Howard Hendricks. As Chuck puts it, "Hendricks believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself." Jesus also believed in his disciples even when they didn’t believe in themselves.

Pastor Crisis

Only 1/3 of seminary students say they want to pastor a church. That trend is magnified by the fact that just 8% of clergy are now 35 or younger. Many are nearing retirement age, and many others are departing for other careers. Eldon Fry of Focus on the Family’s Pastoral Ministries Department has been tracking the trend which he said is readily apparent. "The numbers that are leaving far exceed the numbers in our seminaries and Bible colleges, so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that we’re dealing with a shortage." He regularly gets calls from denominational leaders who perceive a major problem dead ahead. "For instance, one region said that 80% of their pastors were within three-years of retirement, and had absolutely no idea of how they were going to replace them," Fry said. Experts suggest that churches actively mentor people with ministry skills and help them make it into Bible college or seminary.
