Editors note:  In my observation, pastors face more than their fair share of giants in life.  It’s a privilege to have Max Lucado, a seasoned veteran of the pulpit and the pastorate, share insights with the SermonCentral.com audience on how to face and overcome those giants.  This week he’s got a wonderful new book out called Facing Your Giants.  Here he shares about Facing Your Giants in the Pastorate.  We’d also like to invite you to join Max on a conference call on the same topic. Click here if you’d like to register for the free February event exclusively for church leaders.

Facing Your Giants in the Pastorate
A Q&A with Max Lucado

Max, what advice do you have for pastors who are facing giants in leading their church?

Well, first of all I would remind pastors that they are not alone.  Church leadership is in-and-of-itself a Goliath-sized challenge.  It’s a challenge, number one, because Satan doesn’t want us to do it.  And then number two, because we deal with the largest volunteer organizations.  It’s one thing to lead an organization where everyone gets paid to do what they do, but you have to have a special heart for motivation and a special call.  So, it is tough to lead a church at some points and times.

Leading a church is the highest calling.  If God has called you to this responsibility and privilege, it is the highest call.  And the One who called is always faithful and He will always provide.  Remember this from when David battled Goliath.  David had a God-saturated mind.  When David speaks of his battle with Goliath, he refers to God nine times and only refers to Goliath twice.  So, he gives God 4-to-1 odds and his mind is really on God.

4 The Forgotten Figure of Christmas
by Bruce Ritter
Matthew 1:18-1:25
How were you raised to regard Christmas? How are you raising your children to regard the holiday? There was once a family that celebrated Christmas every year with a birthday party for Jesus. An extra chair of honor at the table became the family’s reminder of Jesus’ presence. A cake with candles, along with more »

1 Sweet, Simple Submission
Christin Ditchfield, in a recent issue of Focus on The Family magazine, writes that basically Mary took the news in stride.

“[She] didn’t demand a sign,” notes Ditchfield, “some sort of proof or additional confirmation. She voiced no complaint at the total disruption of her life. She knew now that things would not turn out the way she had planned at all.” She concludes, “But in her heart there was no resistance, no rebellion. Just a sweet, simple submission-surrender to the will of God.”

2 We Don’t Have Time for That!
Typical of last minute Christmas shoppers, a mother was running furiously from store to store. Suddenly she became aware that the pudgy little hand of her three year old son was no longer clutched in hers. In a panic she retraced her steps and found him standing with his little nose pressed flatly against a frosty window. He was gazing at a manger scene. Hearing his mother’s near hysterical call, he turned and shouted with innocent glee: "look mommy! it’s Jesus - baby Jesus in the hay". With obvious indifference to his joy and wonder, she impatiently jerked him away saying, "we don’t have time for that!"

3 The Star of Bethlehem
Bill Keane’s comic strip, Family Circus, has communicated a beautiful truth about Christmas. As the children were setting up their nativity set, little Dolly held up the baby Jesus and declared, “Here’s the star of Bethlehem!”

4 Easier to Keep the Holidays

How many observe Christ’s birthday! How few, his precepts! O! ’tis easier to keep holidays than commandments.

5 The Best Christmas Ever
Years ago an interesting sign was seen hanging in a store window during the Christmas season. The original message stated, “Let’s make this the best Christmas ever.” Underneath, some perceptive person had scribbled a legitimate question: “How will we top the first one?” God has promised an event that will easily overshadow the events that surrounded the first coming.
