Editor’s Note: The whole concept of Sabbath presents multiple dilemmas for the pastor. You want to preach it to your flock because you know God’s given it for a purpose; yet, you yourself can’t rest on the same day that makes the most sense for your congregation to rest. You want to preach Sabbath but you don’t want to yoke them with the burden of a legalistic expectation. And perhaps above all—you want Sabbath for yourself; but as a pastor you have an incredibly difficult time protecting that consistent day each week to rest in God. Mark Buchanan understands well the spirit of the Sabbath and has refreshingly captured it in his book, The Rest of God. Here he shares inspiration for the pastor to look anew at Sabbath. Certainly you need it. God wants you to have it. May he lead you in taking hold of it! After all, Jesus said that Sabbath was made for us. But pause. Turn the coin over. God not only allows us to rest in him; he expects us to. Sabbath is our opportunity to remove ourselves from pretending to be the Center of the Universe—and to reaffirm that we aren’t and that God is. May nothing keep us from Sabbath!
Pastors Need The Rest of God, Too
by Mark Buchanan
The world [and that includes pastors] is dying for the rest of God. I certainly was. I became a Sabbath-keeper the hard way: either that, or die. Not die literally—at least, I don’t think so—but die in other ways. It happened subtly, over time; but I noticed at some point that the harder I worked, the less I accomplished. I was often a whirligig of motion. My days were intricately fitted together like the old game of Mousetrap, every piece precariously connected to every other, the whole thing needing to work together for it to work at all.
But there was little joy, and stunted fruit.
To justify myself, I’d tell others I was gripped by a magnificent obsession. I was purpose-driven, I said, or words like that. It may have begun that way. It wasn’t that way any longer. Often I was just obsessed, merely driven, no magnificence or purposefulness about it. I once went forty days—an ominously biblical number, that—without taking a single day off.
And was proud of it.
But things weren’t right. Though my work often consumed me, I was losing my pleasure in it—and, for that matter, in many other things besides—and losing, too, my effectiveness in it. And here’s a secret: for all my busyness, I was increasingly slothful. I could wile away hours at a time in a masquerade of working, a pantomime of toil—fiddling about on the computer, leafing through old magazines, chatting up people in the hallways. But I was squandering time, not just redeeming it. And whenever I stepped out for a vacation, I did just that: evacuated, vacated,

spilled myself empty. I folded in on myself like a tent suddenly bereft of stakes and ropes and poles, clapped hard by the wind. The air went out of me. Click here to read more.

What Jesus Taught About Grace
But when “grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ,” a long-awaited revolution of the heart began to set religious captives free. Fear-full bondage motivated by guilt was replaced with a fresh motivation to follow Him in truth simply out of deep devotion and delight. Rather than focusing on the accomplishments of the flesh, He spoke of the heart. Instead of demanding that the sinner fulfill a long list of requirements, he emphasized faith, if only the size of a mustard seed. The change spelled freedom, as the Lord himself taught, “…you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Rigid, barren religion was, at last, replaced by a grace-orientated, relationship-liberating grace. His followers loved it. His enemies hated it… and Him.

Pleading For Grace
In his book, “In the Heavenlies,” Dr. Harry Ironside tells the story of an attempted assassination of Queen Elizabeth I. The woman who sought to do so dressed as a male page and secreted herself in the queen’s boudoir awaiting the convenient moment to stab the queen to death. She did not realize that the queen’s attendants would be very careful to search the rooms before Her Majesty was permitted to retire. They found the woman hidden among the gowns and brought her into the presence of the queen; taking from her the poignard she had hope to plant in the heart of the sovereign. She realized that humanly speaking, her case was hopeless. She threw herself down on her knees and pleaded and begged the queen as a woman to have compassion on her, a woman, and to show her grace. Queen Elizabeth looked at her coldly and quietly said, "If I show you grace, what promise will you make for the future?" The woman looked up and said, "Grace that hath conditions, grace that is fettered by precautions, is not grace at all." Queen Elizabeth caught it in a moment and said, "You are right. I pardon you of my grace." And they led her away, a free woman. History tells us that from that moment Queen Elizabeth had no more faithful, devoted servant than that woman who had intended to take her life. That is exactly the way the grace of God works in the life of an individual--he or she becomes a faithful servant of God.

Cheap Grace
“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.”

Grace
Grace, she takes the blame
She covers the shame
Removes the stain
It could be her name
Grace, she’s got the walk
Not on a ramp or on chalk
She’s got the time to talk
She travels outside of karma
She travels outside of karma
When she goes to work
You can hear her strings
Grace finds beauty in everything
What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things
Grace makes beauty out of ugly things

Why Grace is So Amazing
Phillip Yancey describes grace in his book “What’s So Amazing About Grace.” He writes, “Grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us more—no amount of spiritual calisthenics and renunciations, no amount of knowledge gained from seminaries, no amount of crusading on behalf of righteous causes. And grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us less—no amount of racism or pride or pornography or adultery or even murder. Grace means that God already loves us as much an infinite God can possibly love.”
