Preaching the Inconvenient Truth of Hell
by Alex McFarland
Editor’s Note: Alex McFarland has for six years been the Friday host of the national Christian call-in radio program “Truth Talk Live.” He currently serves as Director of Teen Apologetics for Focus On The Family. In August 2006, he will begin serving as the President of Southern Evangelical Seminary and the Veritas Graduate School of Religion, located near Charlotte, North Carolina. He is also engaged in directing the acclaimed National Christian Apologetics Conference where he leads a list of presenters that includes Norman Geisler, Lee Strobel, Ravi Zacharias, Gary Habarmas, and Erwin Lutzer. If you would like to learn more about the convention, we encourage you to visit the event website.
“But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him.” (Luke 12:5, NIV)
“God is love, and the God I believe in would never send someone to hell!” The audience applauded enthusiastically as the TV talk-show host passionately stated her position about the
afterlife. A panel of guests had been assembled to explain various views about death, heaven, hell and God’s judgment. Of those authors and scholars, only one individual defended the biblical teaching about hell—an evangelical minister. And as the show progressed, both audience and interviewer seemed increasingly hostile to the lone evangelical panelist.
The title of this article could be, “Divine Retribution: Reconciling The Goodness of God with the reality of Hell.” Twenty-first century people (even some evangelical Christian people) often shy away from acknowledging the reality of hell. Yet, we find it in the Bible. And we hear of it in the words of Christ. Hell is real, and we are remiss if we do not proclaim that.
Surveys show that in the West, belief in a literal hell is at an all-time low, and its most vocal opponents include some clergy. Scary, huh? Not long ago, a survey of “born again Christians” by the Barna Research Group concluded that Christians are often ignorant about this matter of the faith. Even though 98 percent of those surveyed said that their Christian faith is very important in their life, some of the survey’s findings were discouraging. For example:
—Thirty-eight percent believe that if a person is generally good he can earn a place in heaven. (This contradicts the Bible, which says eternal life is “the gift of God;” see Romans 6:23, Titus 3:5, Ephesians 2:8-9.)
—Fifty percent said that Satan is “not a living being but is a symbol of evil.” (The Bible clearly identifies Satan as a living being, calling him “your enemy;” see 1 Peter 5:8.)
—Thirty-one percent of born again Christians agree with the statement “while He lived on earth, Jesus committed sins, like other people.”1 (The Bible says that Jesus was perfect; He never sinned; see Hebrews 4:14-15.)

| In a world of psychic hotlines, horoscopes, Wicca, and alternative spirituality, Christians must be able to share their beliefs effectively. We have an obligation to proclaim – clearly, consistently, perhaps gently, and of course lovingly- the possibility of heaven and the warnings of hell. Click here to read more.

Joy Hard Won
In Decision, Joni Eareckson Tada writes:
Honesty is always the best policy, but especially when you’re surrounded by a crowd of women in a restroom during a break at a Christian women’s conference. One woman, putting on lipstick, said, "Oh, Joni, you always look so together, so happy in your wheelchair. I wish that I had your joy!" Several women around her nodded. "How do you do it?" she asked as she capped her lipstick.
"I don’t do it," I said. "In fact, may I tell you honestly how I woke up this morning?"
"This is an average day," I breathed deeply. "After my husband, Ken, leaves for work at 6:00 A.M., I’m alone until I hear the front door open at 7:00 A.M. That’s when a friend arrives to get me up.
"While I listen to her make coffee, I pray, ’Oh, Lord, my friend will soon give me a bath, get me dressed, sit me up in my chair, brush my hair and teeth, and send me out the door. I don’t have the strength to face this routine one more time. I have no resources. I don’t have a smile to take into the day. But you do. May I have yours? God, I need you desperately.’"
"So, what happens when your friend comes through the bedroom door?" one of them asked.
"I turn my head toward her and give her a smile sent straight from heaven. It’s not mine. It’s God’s. And so," I said, gesturing to my paralyzed legs, "whatever joy you see today was hard won this morning."
I have learned that the weaker we are, the more we need to lean on God; and the more we lean on God, the stronger we discover him to be.

Living Prayer
I knelt to pray when day was done,
And prayed, "Lord, bless everyone;
Lift from each heart the pain,
And let the sick be well again."
And then I woke again one day,
And carelessly went on my way;
The whole day long I did not try
To wipe a tear from any eye.
I did not try to share the load
Of any brother on the road;
I did not even go to see
the sick man just next door to me.
Yet once again when every day was done,
I prayed, "Lord, bless everyone."
But as I prayed to my ear
Came a voice that whispered dear,
’Pause, hypocrite, before you pray;
Whom have you tried to bless today?
God’s sweetest blessings always go,
By hands that serve Him here below.’"
And then I hid my face and cried,
"Forgive me Lord, for I have lied;
Let me but live another day,
And I will live the way I pray."

Burnout
I remember hearing a story about a man who had missed church for a number of weeks. The preacher had often called him and asked where he was, but the man kept putting the preacher off.
Finally, one day, the preacher stopped by for a visit on a cold winter day.
The man was sitting in front of his fireplace and welcomed the preacher and tried to engage him in conversation. However, the minister didn't say much. He just walked over to the fireplace, pulled one of the logs away from the flame - and then went and sat down. They sat there in silence for the longest time, watching the fire. And as they watched, the log that sat off by itself, the fire on it began to smolder and then it went out.
The preacher and the man sat for a long time looking into the fireplace and then the man said "OK, I'll be at church next Sunday."

Leaning Without Proper Foundation
This past December (12/01), the “Leaning Tower of Pisa” was finally reopened to the public, after having been closed for almost a dozen years. During that time, engineers completed a 25 million dollar renovation project designed to stabilize the tower. They removed 110 tons of dirt, and reduced its famous lean by about sixteen inches. Why was this necessary? Because the tower has been tilting further and further away from vertical for hundreds of years, to the point that the top of the 185-foot tower was seventeen feet further south than the bottom, and Italian authorities were concerned that if nothing was done, it would soon collapse. What was the problem? Bad design? Poor workmanship? An inferior grade of marble? No. The problem was what was underneath. The sandy soil on which the city of Pisa was built was just not stable enough to support a monument of this size. The tower had no firm foundation.

The Hands of the Church
After an accident in which she lost her arm, a girl named Jamie refused to go to school or church for an entire year.
Finally the young teen thought she could face her peers.
In preparation, her mother called her Sunday school teacher and asked that he not call attention to Jamie.
The teacher promised, but when he got sick on Sunday and had to call a substitute, he forgot to tell the second teacher.
At the conclusion of the lesson that day, which was about inviting friends to church, the sub led the class in doing the hand motions to the familiar children’s poem:
Here’s the church.
Here’s the steeple.
Open the doors.
See all the people.
Jamie’s eyes filled with tears.
A 13-year-old boy realized how she must be feeling.
He knelt beside her.
With one hand apiece, they supported each other, making the church, steeple, and people.
Together they illustrated what real church is.
