Handling Homosexuality in Your Preaching
by Tim Wilkins
Editor’s note: Tim Wilkins, a formerly practicing homosexual, is the founder/director of Cross Ministry that is dedicated to equipping the Church to evangelize and disciple the homosexual. He has a Masters of Divinity from Southwestern Seminary. Wilkins is the creator of the 1-day conference– MORE THAN WORDS: walking (versus talking) people out of homosexuality which has been conducted around the country and among many denominations. Here he addresses the topic of Handling Homosexuality in Your Preaching. You may contact him at info@crossministy.org.
Preachers have their own set of temptations! That fact can be illustrated by an event in the life of John Bunyan. Bunyan had preached an unusually anointed sermon. Immediately after the service, a layman jumped from his pew and raced to shake Bunyan’s hand exclaiming “Bunyan, that was the most powerful sermon I have ever heard!” Bunyan replied with brut honesty, “Man, you need not tell me that. The devil whispered it to me before I was well out of the pulpit.”
Preachers face the temptation to “enjoy the sound of their own voice,” to secretly revel in the compliments they hear, and as in the case of Bunyan, to give ear to our adversary’s commendations on our preaching.
How does this relate to our preaching on homosexuality? We are tempted to be grandiose, forceful, and effusive when addressing homosexuality. Scottish preacher James Stuart Stewart wrote, “There is a type of preaching which apparently regards it as more important to generate heat than supply light.” It is easier to denounce homosexuality from the pulpit with great fervor and vast sweeping gestures than to portray a loving God who separates our sin from us as far as the east is from the west.

| Theologian Albert Mohler writes regarding homosexuality, “Evangelical Christians must ask ourselves some very hard questions, but the hardest may be this: Why is it that we have been so ineffective in reaching persons trapped in this particular pattern of sin?” Click here to read more.

Loving Through Conflict
John Wesley and George Whitefield - the two great preachers of the 18th Century Evangelical Revival - were both great men of God. Sadly having been great friends at Oxford, they fell out over the Arminian/Calvinist debate. There was quite a bit of animosity between their followers.
Once one of Whitefield’s followers said to him: "We won’t see John Wesley in the heaven, will we?"
To which Whitefield humbly replied "Yes, you’re right, we won’t see him in heaven. He will be so close to the Throne of God and we will be so far away, that we won’t be able to see him!" What a lovely attitude Whitefield had.
Despite profoundly disagreeing with Wesley, Whitefield recognized John Wesley as being a man of God.
Indeed the respect for the other was so great that when Whitefield died in the United States, John Wesley preached at George Whitefield’s memorial service in London.

The Characteristics of a Spiritual Community
Larry Crab said in his book The Safest Place on Earth, “The difference between the spiritual and unspiritual community is not whether conflict exists, but is rather in our attitude toward it and our approach to handling it. When conflict is seen as an opportunity to draw more fully on spiritual resources, we have the makings of spiritual community.”

A Deserted Church
A man was stranded all alone on the desert island for years before he was finally rescued. His rescuers asked him what the three structures were that he had built on the island. Three buildings seemed perplexing for just one man. He said one was his house, one was his church, and one was where he used to go to church before he got his feelings hurt!

Be More Specific
“When I told the people of Northern Ireland that I was an atheist, a woman in the audience stood up and said, ’Yes, but is it the God of the Catholics or the God of the Protestants in whom you don’t believe?’"

No one can eat unshelled, roasted peanuts while attending church in Idanha, Oregon.
In Honey Creek, Iowa, no one is permitted to carry a slingshot to church except police.
No citizen in Leecreek, Arkansas, is allowed to attend church in any red-colored garment.
Swinging a yo-yo in church or anywhere in public on the Sabbath is prohibited in Studley, Virginia.
Turtle races are not permitted within 100 yards of a local church at any time in Slaughter, Louisiana.
