Father's Day

Editor's note:  Dean Shriver obtained his M.Div. from Western Seminary and his D.Min. at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (under the direction of Dr. Haddon Robinson.) Dr. Shriver is founding pastor of Intermountain Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, UT where he has ministered for 19 years.  He is the author of "Nobody's Perfect, But You Have to Be: The Power of Personal Integrity in Effective Preaching," published by Baker Books.  It's a highly recommended volume for pastors and can be obtained directly from the publisher at a discount by clicking here:  Nobody's Perfect. Dr. Shriver lives in South Jordan, UT with his wife Nancy and their three children.  We've asked him here to address the SermonCentral audience on the topic of "integrity in preaching."

PERSONAL INTEGRITY IN PREACHING
by Dean Shriver

“Your temper is uneven; you lack love for your neighbors.  You grow angry too easily; your tongue is too sharp—thus the people will not hear you.”  John Wesley wrote these words to a struggling preacher.  In them, we are reminded that the impact of our preaching isn’t ultimately determined by our mastery of homiletic technique or our clever use of illustration.  The preaching that transforms lives is rooted as deeply in how we live as in what we say.  In other words, preaching to change lives requires us to preach with integrity.  Integrity is “the state of being whole or undivided.”  As preachers, we demonstrate integrity when unity exists between the truth we proclaim to our congregations and the lives we live before them.  Simply put, integrity exists when we “practice what we preach.”
The call to preach requires more of us than verbal proclamation of truth.  We must not only speak God’s Word so it can be heard, we must live God’s Word so it can be seen.  To know this, we need look no further than the ministry of Christ.  Jesus is our model for ministry.  Jesus is God’s perfect preacher.  John 1:14 tells us that, in Jesus, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.  We have seen His glory.”  Jesus did more than speak truth.  He lived as truth incarnate.  Consider Jesus’ sermon on servanthood in John 13.  His words (13:13-17) are empowered by his life (13:1-5).  What Jesus says and what Jesus is are one and the same!  This is our model for preaching.
Paul, too, understood that the call to preach is a call to
both speak and live the truth.  Paul committed himself to a life of integrity that both validated and empowered his preaching.  He lived carefully so as to put “no stumbling block in anyone’s path.”  More surprising—and certainly more challenging—was Paul’s habit of calling attention to his own conduct. You Forgot
When my son Scott was a senior in high school, he used to cause problems by parking his truck in the driveway. Nobody could get in or out because his truck was big enough to go to war. I always told him to park it out in the street.
One day I came home to find he'd not only blocked the driveway with his truck but had gone away and taken his keys with him. I was furious. Three hours later he showed up, and I was waiting for him. I stormed out of the house and let him have it. I didn't leave him in doubt about what he'd done wrong and how I felt about it.
As I was walking back to the house, Scott raced after me. He followed me into the kitchen. "Dad?," he said, "You forgot the last part of the reprimand--you know, the part about 'You're a good kid, I love you, and this is so unlike you?'"
I cracked up laughing. We hugged. Scott never left his truck in the driveway again. And I got better at reaffirming at the end of a reprimand.

We Thought You Said…
The kids had talked Mom into getting a hamster They promised to take care of their pet, whom they named “Danny.”
Within two months though, Mom was taking care of Danny. One day Mom decided enough was enough; Danny would be given to a new owner. She called the kids together to tell them. One child said, “I’ll miss him. He’s been around here a long time.” The other child remarked, “Maybe he could stay if he ate less and wasn’t so messy.” Mom was firm, “It is time to take Danny to a new home.”
“Danny?” the kids wailed, “We thought you said Daddy.”

Braggin’ 'Bout Dad
Three boys in the schoolyard were bragging about who had the better father:
The first boy says, “My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a poem, and they give him $100.”

The second boy says, “That’s nothing. My Dad scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, he calls it a song, and they give him $1000.”

The third boy says, “My Dad is ever better than that. He scribbles a few words on a piece of paper, calls it a sermon, and it takes 6 or 8 men just to collect all the money!”

A Father’s Day Top Ten
Things you’ve been itchin’ to say for years now!
We often hear "the rules" from the feminine side. Ok- we’ll now hear the guys’ side - it’s only fair – (realizing of course that Father’s Day is the only day of the year we could get away with it!).

#10 Whenever possible, please say whatever you have to say during commercials.

#9 Shopping is NOT a sport, and no, we are never going to think of it that way.

#8 Sunday = sports. It’s like the full moon or the changing of the tides. Let it be.

#7 “Yes” and “No” are perfectly acceptable answers to almost every question.

#6 Check your oil! Please, check your oil!

#5 Anything we said 6 months ago is inadmissible in an argument. In fact, all past comments become null and void after 7 days.

#4 If something we said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, we meant the other one.

#3 If we ask what is wrong and you say "nothing," we will act like nothing’s wrong. We know you are lying, but it is just not worth the hassle.

#2 ALL men see in only 16 colors, like Windows default settings. Peach, for example, is a fruit, not a color. Pumpkin is also a fruit. We have no idea what mauve is.

#1 Christopher Columbus did not need directions, and neither do we…
