Editor's Note: Our guest writer this week is Dr. Mark Straus, professor of New Testament at Bethel Seminary San Diego. You may recognize him from his published books or as an oft-quoted expert in the writings of Lee Strobel. Whether you are a young pastor still developing your preaching style or a seasoned verteran of the pulpit, Dr. Strauss offers a helpful word for calibrating our preaching to a high standard of biblical interpretation and delivery.
How Not to Preach!
Or,
Three Errors for Young Preachers to Avoid
Mark L. Strauss
I am not a full-time pastor or a preaching professor. But I do a preach a great deal (every week; sometimes several times a week). As a professor of New Testament and Greek, I also train a lot of pastors. I would like to offer a little advice for young pastors seeking to develop their preach skills. Here are three errors to avoid.
Error 1: Leading A Horse to a Dry Stream
Preaching less than the text
I am amazed at how often I hear sermons that miss the central point of a passage. A biblical text will be read and the preacher may start with this passage, but will then head off in a different direction. The problem is the preacher has a point to make and has simply used the text as a launching point.
The best way to avoid this error is to identify clearly the “big idea” or the central point of each passage you teach. Especially helpful in this regard is Haddon Robinson’s classic book Biblical Preaching, which argues that every passage of Scripture has one central theme, and this is what the preacher should preach. All sub-points should relate directly to this central point, and your congregation should leave knowing exactly what the point was. This is because you have introduced it at the beginning, stated it clearly at each transition point, illustrated it regularly, and concluded with it. If you cannot state in one clear sentence the point of the passage, then you are not ready to preach it (see Robinson’s book for details on how to find and compose the “big idea”).

The Fire of Pentecost: A Dangerous Reenactment
In his sermon, “A Dangerous Pentecost,” Halford Luccock tells of Lorenzo de’Medici, the great Florentine patron of the arts who was very proud of the spectacles he staged for the citizenry. Among his productions were several amazingly realistic religious pageants performed in church. But one Pentecost, Lorenzo went too far: he used actual fire to depict the descent of the tongues of flames on the apostles. The fragile stage set caught fire and, before horrified onlookers, the entire church burned to the ground (Marching Off the Map, Harper, 1952). The moral is clear: pray for Pentecostal power, but don’t try to manufacture it.

Standing in His Way
"A church in the land without the Spirit is rather a curse than a blessing. If you have not the Spirit of God, Christian worker, remember that you stand in somebody else’s way; you are a fruitless tree standing where a fruitful tree might grow."

“The Force” Be With Them
You’d have to be living under a rock not to have heard of Star Wars, but if you are not “into” the Star Wars saga you may not know that the two-foot tall, 800+year old character you just saw is Yoda. Now, it’s true, Yoda can’t speak a straightforward English sentence. “Totally backward his sentences are.” But Yoda is special for he is a Jedi Knight, actually, a Master Jedi. Jedi Knights are the good guys in Star Wars. They possess special gifts: they are especially discerning, they guide, protect, help people and as you just saw, yield a pretty good lightsaber (a sort of laser sword) against the bad guys. They are obedient to and unified by “The Force” which serves, as creator George Lucas says, “As the spiritual foundation for the movie.” Lucas has actually told TIME magazine said that one of his purposes for the Star Wars saga was to awaken and stimulate people’s thinking about God and what God is really like.

Becoming What We Should Be
"No local congregation will be what it should be, what Jesus prayed that it would be, what the Holy Spirit gifted it and empowered it to be, until it understands spiritual gifts." John MacArthur

Thinking Properly About Spiritual Gifts
Rick Warren has said in his book “Purpose Driven Life” that there are 2 main problems when thinking about spiritual gifts. One is called “gift-envy”. This means that we compare our abilities and gifts to others. In doing that, we might feel tempted to feel jealous of others or feel dissatisfied with what God has given us. The second problem is “gift-projection”. This happens when you expect other people to have your gift, do things as you do them and to feel the same way you do about that subject with the same passion. This just isn’t going to happen.
